Richmond is just south of the River Thames opposite East Twickenham, but because the river meanders, Richmond is really east of the river, which runs round the town.  The river at Richmond is tidal, so to enable traffic to move during low tide, a half tide lock was opened in 1894. The weir makes sure that there is always a min depth of 1.72 metres of water in the River between Teddington and Richmond whatever the state of the tide.

Richmond has green and open public spaces. Richmond Green is in the middle of the town which is more or less square and, if combined with the Little Green, is twelve acres in size.  Richmond Green is surrounded by well-used roads that offer car parking for both residents and visitors. The main shopping area is in the South of Richmond.

The Richmond main road is the A316, which runs from Chiswick and the M3 motorway, through Old Deer Park and Richmond to its north. Richmond town centre is on the A307 which links south west London with Surrey this was originally part of the old Portsmouth Road before it was diverted away from the town.
